Importance of Yoga

Why do we need yoga? It's a question worth asking in today's fast-paced world, where long hours of sitting, constant stress and busy schedules often leave us feeling physically exhausted and mentally overwhelmed.

This is where yoga makes a difference. More than just a form of exercise, it helps reconnect the mind and body while improving strength, flexibility and overall wellbeing. Regular practice can also reduce stress, improve posture and support long-term physical and mental health.

What if just 15 minutes a day could help you feel calmer, stronger and more balanced? Let's explore why yoga remains one of the most powerful practices for a healthier life.

What is yoga? Is it just a physical activity or meditation?

Yoga is much more than just exercise. Yogic practices are rooted in ancient Indian tradition. The word meaning of yoga is union – union of the mind, body and soul.

Yogic practices help in self -healing, mindfulness and a deeper state if awareness. Yogic practices include Asana(physical postures), Pranayama(breath-work), Shatkarma(cleansing practices), Dhyana(meditation).

Ashtanga yoga – The eight limbs of Yoga

The ancient yogic system by Patanjali is prescribed as Ashtanga yoga. These eight limbs are:

PratyaharaWithdrawal of senses

Scientific Reasons Behind Yoga’s Health Benefits

1.Stress Management and Mental Health

Cortisol Regulation: Yoga helps to lower levels of cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Practices including asana, pranayama, and meditation activate the parasympathetic nervous system and suppress the sympathetic nervous system. this leads to reduced anxiety, depression and overall stress.

Improved mood: yoga promotes the release of happy hormones serotonin and endorphins, improving mood and emotional stability. Clinical studies show its effective for depressive symptoms and can supplement treatment for conditions such as PTSD.

2. Improved Strength, Flexibility and Balance

Musculoskeletal Benefits: Regular practice increase flexibility and strength by stretching and working large muscle groups. Flexibility is crucial for healthy aging and studies show yoga slows down age-related problems.

Balance and Posture: Yoga strengthens muscles that support posture, enhances alignment and improve balance, reducing the risk of falls- especially in older adults.

3. Cardiovascular and Respiratory function

Blood Pressure and Heart Health: Yoga can lower blood pressure and resting heart rate, improve heart rate variability and restore the body’s ability to maintain blood pressure, the key for cardiovascular health.

Pranayama (Yogic Breathing): Breath focused practices improves lung function, help in condition like asthma and enhance oxygen intake. This leads to optimized heart and lung function.

4. Immunity and Inflammation

Boost Immunity: By managing stress and reducing inflammation – yoga helps to improve body immunity. This is observed in regular yoga practitioners.

Reduces Inflammation: lower inflammation is associated with reduced risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

5. Pain Management and Functional Mobility

Chronic Pain Relief: yoga is clinically shown to reduce chronic pain especially in lower back pain, cervical pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia via gentle movements and stretches

Functional Mobility: people practicing yoga exhibit better mobility, flexibility and reduced age- related decline in mobility.

6. Improved Sleep Quality

Deeper quicker sleep: the relaxation practices in yoga helps people to fall asleep more quickly and improves sleep quality.

Yoga is a lifestyle – yoga is not just something you do – it’s a way you live.

BEYOND FLEXIBILITY AND PERFECT POSES

When I first began practising yoga, I believed it was all about flexibility- touching my toes, mastering deep backbends or perfecting advance asanas. For a long time, that was my definition of ‘’doing yoga right’’.

It wasn’t until I immersed myself in ashtanga vinyasa, with their challenging primary and intermediate series, that my perspective shifted. Reaching advanced asanas didn’t bring the sense of completion I expected.

Instead, I realized yoga isn’t about flawless shapes or extreme flexibility – it’s about truly knowing and respecting your body, meeting its needs and staying calm and connected even during challenges.

Inversions taught me this in the most profound way. For over a year, I avoided them out of fear of falling. When I finally committed, I fell countless times. Each time I got up and tried again, I was unknowingly training a life skill – resilience.

Now, if I stumble in life, I remember the lessons from my mat: falling isn’t failure and strength lies in rising again. Yoga for me has become less about the poses themselves and more about self- awareness, patience, and inner strength that grow through the practice.

A PRACTICE FOR EVERYONE

The beauty of yoga is that it meets you where you are. You don’t have to be flexible, experienced or perfectly calm to start. You just need a willingness to show up – for your body, for your breath, and for yourself.

So the next time life feels heavy or you find yourself disconnected unroll your mat. You may start with a simple stretch, a deep breath or a simple posture. But with time, you’ll find that yoga becomes more than a movement – it becomes a way of living.
