Yoga for Stress Relief

Not long ago, a client of mine came in feeling “scattered and foggy,” overwhelmed by life and unsure of what she needed. She had tried everything – supplements, counselling, even changed her diet, but still felt off. I asked her gently, “When was the last time you moved your body without expecting anything in return?” She paused… and laughed. “I don’t even remember.”

That’s when I introduced her to a very simple but powerful naturopathic tool: asana. Yoga for stress relief can offer a gentle way to reconnect with the body, calm the mind, and create space to pause when life feels overwhelming.

How Yoga Helps With Stress and Emotional Well-Being

Naturopathy teaches us that healing isn’t about silencing symptoms. It’s about reconnection to our bodies, to nature and to our deeper rhythms. Mental instability, emotional overwhelm or chronic stress are signs that something in the inner ecosystem is out of alignment.

Asana, the physical practice of yoga become a gateway of restoring this alignment not just physically but emotionally and energetically.

How Asana Helps Relieve Stress Naturally

Yoga for stress relief can support emotional well-being by helping the body release tension and creating a calmer state of mind.

It creates safe space for emotional release

We consider emotional health just as important as physical detox. The body stores emotions – Grief in the lungs, anxiety in belly, fear in hips. Gentle hip openers like Pigeon Pose or heart openers like Bridge Pose allow the body to exhale tension that’s been silently stored for years.

It calms the storm within

Forward fold, slow twists and supported inversions activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This lowers cortisol, slows heart rate and signals to brain that we are safe. It’s nature’s way of saying, “You can rest now”.

It moves stuck energy

Both yoga and naturopathy recognize the concept of vital force or prana – the energy that animates life. When prana is blocked, we feel emotionally stuck, foggy or anxious. Asana clears these pathways (nadis) and supports emotional fluidity and clarity.

6 Yoga Poses for Stress Relief and Emotional Balance

Try this short sequence when you’re feeling overwhelmed. If your body feels stiff, especially around the back or hips, begin with a few gentle warm-up movements before starting the sequence. You can also include simple lower back stretches if you experience tension in the lower back.

1. Child’s Pose (Balasana) – Deep grounding

Kneel on your mat, bring your hips back toward your heels, and fold your upper body forward. Rest your forehead on the mat and take slow, comfortable breaths.

2. Cat-Cow Pose – Release tension in the spine

Come onto your hands and knees with your wrists under your shoulders. Slowly alternate between rounding your spine as you exhale and gently lifting your chest as you inhale.

3. Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana) – Calm the mind

Sit with your legs extended in front of you and slowly fold forward from your hips. Keep the movement gentle and avoid forcing yourself to reach your feet.

4. Reclined Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana) – Open the heart

Lie on your back, bring the soles of your feet together, and allow your knees to gently fall outward. Place your hands comfortably on your abdomen or beside you and breathe slowly.

5. Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall) – Soothe the nervous system

Lie on your back with your legs resting comfortably against a wall. Let your arms relax by your sides and stay here for several slow breaths.

6. Savasana – Complete surrender

Lie comfortably on your back with your arms and legs relaxed. Close your eyes, release any effort, and allow your breathing to return to its natural rhythm.

If you regularly experience discomfort or stiffness, a gentle yoga practice can also complement yoga for pain relief, particularly when combined with appropriate movement and guidance.

Yoga Calms the Nervous System

We say that healing is not about becoming someone new – it’s about remembering who you are when you’re in balance with nature, with breath, and with your own inner rhythm.

Asana doesn’t need to be complex or perfect. It just needs to be honest. When practiced with presence, even one pose can shift your whole day. Building a consistent yoga practice at home can make this sense of calm easier to carry into everyday life.”

So next time your mind feels heavy, don’t ask yourself what to fix, ask yourself how you can return.
